Dekumo 2013

Hi! My weekend was pretty busy but I could manage to visit "Dekumo 2013" in Stuttgart today!

It's a craft fair for design, art and fashion, held once a year, always around christmas time so it was perfect to get some pretty christmas gifts. There were so many beautiful things to see. Fashion, jewelry, furniture, accessories, bags, paintings, greeting cards, stationary, art.
So I went there to have some fun with shopping but also to see all the stall presentations. I really want to attend this fair next year too, so my second look was how all the different designers presented themselves, their products and their stalls.

A few lessons I've learned:
Focus your brand. Some stalls were just too colorful, too crafty, too many different products, this looks not very professional. So focusing on a theme makes sense and a much more unified image. Some stalls had their products without price tags, but people feel not always comfortable in asking for the prices. Also the packaging is really really important. It can turn the simplest things into a real beautiful gift! Too many stalls looked similar, it's important to give the stall life and seperate it from all the others. A good way is to not put a table all along the front covered with your stock. If it is a walk in stall it gives the booth much more life and the use of layers and different levels on a table, different heights makes it easier for people to see what you have! And how you present yourself also affects how you will sell your products!

Like I said before, I really want to attend next year but until then my first goal and step is to open an etsy/ daWanda shop and put some items there and build up a homepage!
There is so much to think about now! Good night! It's late!

iFontMaker

Hi! Today I'd love to share with you a really cool App for your ipad: iFontMaker (see here their youtube video tutorial)
It is a super fun and easy method to create your own handwriting in just minutes!
The app leads you through the entire alphabet and there are a few standard fonts to choose from to take them as a guide in the background for the size and also the shape.

At the end you can upload it to the web and you can email a link and download it to your computer. This font making method is not a professional one but I'd like to create a more personal feeling for my blog and I think this is a nice and easy way to pretty it up:-) Hopefully I will find some time doing this next week! Here is my first handwriting font:

The app is only 5,99 Euro and it`s really fun!!!

Competitions

There are a lot of competition going on which I think are a really great way of getting your work noticed in the world out there. The rewards are mostly not really good but you have to start somewhere and this is a great chance to get your design recognised worldwide, so I had a go at the
Brabantia competition and added two of my designs for their global canister range

Please like the designs if you do :-)
"Cherry"
"Two Hearts"
are my submissions.
Fingers crossed and good luck to everyone else who entered!

ta daaaahhh! Cushion cover!

I made this cushion today using my self designed fabric that I ordered from stoffn.de ! There`s a lot of white on that design and I can see it already ....banana, chocolate, milk... the unwashed little fingers from my daughter on it. But I made a zipper opening on the bottom so I can remove it for washing:-)

I also did some more research and will have a try now with textilio.de  and stoff schmie.de for another textile print with another design to compare the quality....

Proud of my very first designed and sewed cushion I rest my head on it now!

fabric in my postbox!

Look what arrived in my postbox today! I received the package with my very first order from stoffn.de ! Have been waiting for weeks:-)
It`s the first time for me to see my design printed on fabric, waaaahhh, that`s exciting!!! Although I´m not so happy with the red colour. It`s not red enough, more like a deep orange. But hey, that´s my first print. Waiting for the weekend to sew a cushion cover from it! Show you the result in a couple of days:-) Happy weekend everybody!

A new collection

I need a day with 42 hours or so...

I`m still so behind with all the exercises from the ABSPD Class. But at least I finished a collection this night from an exercise of week 3...(can you tell me how to work from home with a toddler who is never resting...?!)

Tomorrow I´m a few days off for hiking. The deadline for The Graduate Showcase submission is 10th October. I think I cannot manage to finish all the exercises from class until then but at least I want to have a few really cool designs until then. I want to be in the situation that I cannot decide which one to submit :-)

I produced tons of layouts for this collection, so I just submitted a few of them for the current Tigerprint Competition. Wish me luck!
That's it for today. Puh. TIRED. But satisfied to finished at least one thing on my endless to do list:-) See you in a week! My night will be short, have to get up early to pack my bags:-)

Designing Fabric...

I think it`s time to order some fabric with my Design to see the results in "real life" now!

Spoonflower is an awesome fabric company that allows you to create fabrics with your own designs! Each design can be ordered in varieties of fabrics from quilting cotton, to canvas or silk. You can even order a design as wallpaper or gift wrap. And because everything is printed to order it`s not really cheap. They are based in the US and they're shipping worldwide but I was searching for a similar company in Europe and I found stoffn.de. It´s almost the same but they only print fabric and no wrapping paper and wallpapers.

This morning I've uploaded my Cherry Design file to stoffn.de ...

... and  can`t wait to get it printed and delivered! I´ll post pictures with the results when I receive it! Think I´ll sew a cushion or a tote bag or maybe an apron ...?!

Stationary !!!

My first stationary design collection!
This is the result of last weeks assignment, and I'm so happy with how it turned out! I would love to see my designs on stationary in stores one day!
This night I am going to search the internet for good online printing companies. Any tips for me? I want to print them, and all my other designs sooner rather than later! I feel like I'm ready! Have a nice sunday evening!

Graduate Showcase

I am back from my lovely holiday in Sicily and I had a really great and relaxing time there. With sunshine, the ocean, good food and wine. And no internet access!
So these three weeks I was waiting patiently for the final module 1 showcase of ‘The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design’.
I was so excited to check Rachel Taylor's blog and yeah! I was lucky to make it in the showcase!
Happy! ...And looking so much forward to starting the next  module in August!

Graduate Showcase

Ok, this was really hard for me:-)

There is the opportunity to be featured in the Module 1 Graduate Showcase of the ABSPD Course.

To make a decision which of my designs I'm going to submit was a real challenge for me. I asked friends and family which one they like most, ...ok, it`s a matter of taste, they all gave me different answers! aaaah! So I go with my husbands everyday totally CLEAR answer: "I`ve already told you, take the red one!" :-)

Character Creating

This is my try on creating a small little personality.
I can see it on textile and/or stationary things or kitchen ware. If I find time I think I should change the shape of the nose a little bit and also play around with the colour and maybe I`m going to create a little more world around them...
So...tell me: you like them?

I love paper!

I love paper! so much! Everytime when I'm out and about and I discover a beautiful piece of paper, then I have absolutely no chance... > I have to buy it. So I was happy with week five's exercise of the ABSPD Course: wrapping paper! I'd love having my own paper produced, that would be so cool!
Here is my first attempt of wrapping paper.

Layered Look

Hello!
This morning I found some time to build up my hand made layered pattern (which was a really fun exercise in week 4 of ABSPD course) in Photoshop.
I determined that if I have just fun while doing and do not think to much about it, then...mostly I´m really pleased with the result! So keep your mind free and easy!

More Colour!

Today I am creating some colour combinations! I can`t wait until it`s getting finally warm here in Germany. Spring is just not there this year and summer won`t come! Really inspired by the "Color Inspirations Book" from Colourlovers.com, I spent some time this afternoon creating my own summer color combinations. My small working space is a glorious mess now, but I like it!

Colour

This weeks exercises are all about colour. I love colour. This exercise was really fun!I tried to look at the colour combinations really intense and then tried to find an expression for the mood they are giving me. And I was surprised that I didn`t have to think about all the expressions really long.

Just after doing this exercise I recognized that I`m looking at colours around me in a different light from now on!

The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design

I`m so exited! I'm doing the e-course "ABSPD-Module 1" now and it's so amazing!

I`ve created my first few patterns these days and I`m really addicted to it!

My starting point and inspiration were pictures of beautiful corals and flowers. I cut the shapes out of paper, scanned it and used Photoshop to create my first patterns from them! And now I`m proud! I love the simple shapes that this method brings with! So... can`t wait to create a few more of these colurful lovely illustrations. So much fun! Here they are!
